The real coast, cheaper
The Outer Banks beach hotels are about an hour east of us, and they cost what beach hotels cost — a lot, especially in season. We're the coast without the resort markup. What you give up is gloss: there's no spa, no lobby fountain, no rooftop bar. What you get back is room to breathe, real quiet, and a bill that doesn't make you wince. The Pamlico Sound is right here, the sunsets over the water are free, and the money you save on the room is money you can actually spend on the day. For a lot of travelers that's a fair trade, and an easy one once they've stood on the front porch.
What's worth doing
You won't run out of things to do, even out here. The big one is a ferry day-trip to Ocracoke — the dock is about 15 minutes west of us, and the island at the other end is one of the best stretches of the North Carolina coast. Closer to home there's fishing the sound, the slow scenic drive along U.S. 264, and Lake Mattamuskeet about eleven miles north, with its open water and big winter skies. A simple, honest room
The room is exactly what it looks like — clean, simple, and comfortable, with A/C and heat, free Wi-Fi, and free parking with room for a boat or trailer if you brought one. There's a wide front porch with rocking chairs and a hot home-cooked breakfast every morning — grits, eggs, bacon, muffins, oatmeal — for just a few dollars, which is about as good a deal as you'll find on this coast. Budget stay, good pizza. You can save a lot on your hunting or fishing trip and get a $10 thin-crust pizza served by super-nice local folks. Convenient to Lake Mattamuskeet and all the region's parks and wildlife refuges.

A diamond in the rough. A charming throwback of a hotel. The owner was extremely personable and offered help several times. It was clean, cozy and enjoyable — and I love being able to use a local business over a chain. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
A life-saver on the road. This sure beats driving fifty more miles to Manteo for lodging. The room and bathroom were clean, the linens were clean and the heater worked great. Reserve ahead if you're staying in the Engelhard area.
