Fifteen simple, spotless rooms in the heart of Engelhard — the only hotel in the village, and the closest pillow to Lake Mattamuskeet.
There is nothing fussy about Hotel Engelhard, and that is exactly the point. The rooms are small and immaculate — clean linens, a good heater, air conditioning for the summer, and quiet enough to hear the marsh at first light. Wi-Fi is free, parking is free and right outside your door, and a hot breakfast waits in the morning. Out front, a wide porch lined with rocking chairs is the unofficial gathering spot — coffee at dawn, trip notes at dusk.
Out here, the next hotel is a long way off — so if your plans bring you to the refuge, to a fishing weekend or to the ferry, reserve early. Rooms vary a little from one to the next; tell us how many of you there are and we'll match you to the right one.
