There are no bridges to Ocracoke — you get there by boat. From this stretch of the mainland the long, scenic crossing leaves from Swan Quarter, about 15 minutes west of us on U.S. 264. We're the closest hotel to the dock: sleep here, eat breakfast, and make the morning sailing rested.

The Swan Quarter–Ocracoke ferry is a long crossing on a limited daily schedule, and the early boats fill up. Drive in the morning from a beach town and you're gambling on traffic, the line, and a held reservation. Stay in Engelhard the night before and the gamble disappears.
We're used to ferry mornings: a hot breakfast cooked early, coffee for the road, and a quiet room so you actually sleep before a long day on the water. Park free at the door, roll out before the dock crowd, and be first in line for the boat.

Why stay the night before
The Swan Quarter dock is only about 15 minutes west of us on U.S. 264 — close, but it's still a pre-dawn drive with a held reservation and no margin for a wrong turn, a slow truck, or a deer in the road. People try it. Most of the ones who tell us about it afterward say they'd rather have slept here. A vehicle ferry doesn't wait, and missing your slot can mean waiting hours for the next one or losing the day.
The simpler version: drive in the evening before, take a quiet room, and let the morning be easy. We do a hot home-cooked breakfast every day — grits, eggs, bacon, muffins, oatmeal — for a few dollars, and there's coffee on early. Tell us at the desk that you're catching the boat and we'll make sure you're up and out with time to spare. If your sailing is before we're pouring coffee, call ahead and we'll sort out a pre-dawn departure; we keep odd hours for ferry folks.
Reading the schedule
Swan Quarter runs a limited number of sailings a day, and the crossing takes roughly two and a half hours over Pamlico Sound, so the day is built around the boat, not the other way around. Reserve your vehicle ahead — spots fill, especially in summer and on holiday weekends — and plan to arrive early to load, because a latecomer can lose a held place. After the boat
When you come back across, the room's still here and still cheap — a calm place to land after a long day on the water and the road. Plenty of guests use us as a base and day-trip the island instead of staying over there, where rooms run high.
