An Intracoastal Drive

Engelhard sits directly on U.S. 264 in Hyde County, where the highway threads between the Pamlico Sound and the farm country of the mainland. There’s no fast way here, and that’s the point: the road slows you down, the cell signal thins out, and somewhere past the last big town the sky takes over. Watch the water for working boats, the fields for deer at dusk, and in winter, the marsh for swans.

By air

The nearest major airport is Norfolk International (ORF) in Virginia, about two and a half hours north. Pitt–Greenville (PGV) and Coastal Carolina Regional (EWN, New Bern) are smaller options to the west. However you fly in, you’ll want a car — this is rural country with no rideshares to speak of, and the drive is half the pleasure.

The Swan Quarter ferry

For a day on Ocracoke Island, the Swan Quarter ferry dock is about a 15-minute drive west on U.S. 264. The crossing is long and scenic, so reserve a vehicle spot ahead and check the current N.C. Ferry schedule. There’s a full write-up on our ferry page.
