Folks who stay with us hunt a few different kinds of ground, and it helps to know the lay of it before you load the truck. Here's the honest rundown of what's near the inn.
Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge
The refuge wraps the lake about eleven miles north of us and is run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, not the state. There's regulated waterfowl hunting on the refuge impoundments, but it's its own animal — often permit-based, with its own application process, dates, boundaries and rules that don't match the general state season. State game lands in Hyde County
Around the refuge there's a good amount of public ground managed by the state. Gull Rock Game Land is one of the better-known pieces, and there are other public game lands scattered across Hyde County. These are state-managed under NCWRC rules, which differ from the federal refuge rules — so don't assume what's true on one holds on the other.
Guided hunts and private leases
Not everyone wants to figure out the public ground cold, and you don't have to. There are guided waterfowl hunts and private leases in this part of Hyde County. We don't steer anyone to a particular outfit, but if you're new to the area, booking a guide for your first morning is a fair way to learn the water and save yourself a wasted trip.
A few honest notes
This is big, wet, public-land country, and it hunts like it:
- A boat and waders help. A lot of the good water is shallow, muddy, and a walk from the truck.
- Scout ahead. Where the birds were last week isn't always where they are this week. A morning spent looking before you hunt pays off.
- Public ground can get competitive, especially after a cold front when everyone's chasing the same fresh birds. Get there early and have a backup spot.
- Respect the boundaries and the rules. Refuge, state game land and private lease lines run right up against each other out here, and they're not always obvious in the dark.

Access, permits, open areas and boundaries change from year to year, and the federal refuge plays by different rules than the state game lands. Before you hunt, verify the current rules and access for any state ground with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC), and check the Mattamuskeet refuge regulations directly with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
